WasteBuster Schools

SCAPA

School for the Creative and Performing Arts

Kudos to SCAPA

Students at SCAPA (School for the Creative and Performing Arts) have embraced recycling and waste reduction.  Early in the school year, students of science teacher Ashlie Beal designed posters to increase awareness of recycling.  The posters, placed throughout the school, depicted common items that are recyclable.

Recently Ms. Beal’s students entered the Lexus Environmental Challenge.  Their entry Improving Fuel Efficiency and Reducing Carbon Dioxide Emissions, won, and are now in the second phase of the competition.   School staff, under the direction of Karen Stayton, also replaced their disposable water bottles with reusable bottles and a water cooler.  Way to go SCAPA!

Pennyroyal Small and Exotic Animal Hospital

The Pennyroyal Small and Exotic Animal Hospital has been in operation since 1997, when Dr. Bianca Zaffarano purchased the Lexington Small Animal Hospital.  They offer services to dogs and cats, as well as non-domestic animals such as ferrets, rabbits, rodents, reptiles, avian and marsupials.

They began to participate in the city’s recycling effort soon after that.  In August 2007, Dr. Zaffarano heard about the WasteBuster program through the Southland Business Association and asks Bluegrass PRIDE to help expand their recycling efforts.  The WasteBuster program helped increase their recycling by offering training for their staff, and providing promotional materials and signage.

This beautiful property is a combination of 221 apartments for rent and about 100 condos for sale, and includes walking paths and a 3 acre pond.  The property is located in the Hamburg area of Lexington.  In an effort to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill, residents are informed of the opportunity to recycle at Villages at Hamburg Farms.  Blue recycling “Rosies” are housed besides the compactor and residents can conveniently recycle paper, plastics, aluminum cans, steel cans, cardboard and glass in them.

We would like to commend Villages at Hamburg Farms for their participation in the LFUCG WasteBuster Apartment program.
