Rain Barrel Blues
Nick Smith
Barrel Location: Clark County Public Library
Artist Bio: Nick Smith, a Lexington native, began independently creating art at the age of 16. After two years of studying nuclear propulsion in the US Navy, he became interested in mixing art and the decidedly less creative field of science. Since his discharge in 2004, he has worked in both tangible and intangible media in order to further his knowledge and appreciation of color, and the emotion evoked thereby. Currently, he works as a printmaker in Lexington, and is a member of Bluegrass Mensa as well as the International Guild of Disabled Artists and Performers.
Artist Interpretation: A rain barrel is a way of "combining" humanity and the elements. The colors used, a gradient from light blue at the top to deep blue at the bottom will suggest the fresh water inside, as well as our pride in the Bluegrass' Kentucky Wildcats. White trim frames the barrel, causing a stark contrast and allowing the barrel to stand out against its outdoor backdrop.
